Plywood

INTRODUCTION

Plywood is an engineered panel made from slicing thin veneers and alternating the grain direction for successive layers, then gluing them together to form a sheet. It is arguably the strongest and most versatile building material available.

It is also a renewable resource, with a wide variety of applications.

GRADING

The faces and backs of plywood are sorted into 4 main grades, A, B, C & D.

An “A” grade face would allow for only small defects whereas a“D” face would allow for knots and splits.

The most common grade is“C” being the face grade for CD Structural Plywood. “A” and “B” grade faces are most often seen in exposed situations like walls and ceilings  where the appearance of the face veneer is paramount.

STRUCTUAL PLYWOOD

Used mainly in load bearing applications, structural Plywood is manufactured to AS/NZS 2269 specification. It has type‘A’ Bond Phenol Formaldehyde glue with E0 Formaldehyde emissions. It is typically stress graded to F11 or F14 and is available in thicknesses from 7 to 25mm. Sheet sizes are 2400/2700 x 1200 in CD and DD and can be ACQ or LOSP treated. Structural Plywood is the most widely used of all plywoods in Australia for a variety of building applications.

EXTERIOR PLYWOOD

As the name suggests Exterior Plywood is intended for exterior non structural applications. With high grade face veneers, typically AC & BB it is ideal for a range of painting / staining applications. Manufacture to AS/NZS 2271, it has an ‘A’ Bond Phenol Formaldehyde glueline with E0 emissions.

Stress graded to F14 or F17, exterior plywood is available in thicknesses from 3mm to 32mm. Most frequently used in non structural applications where a superior face for painting or polishing is required.

FORMPLY

Used mainly in the Building Industry for concrete formwork. With a high density overlay (HD0) of phenolic resin impregnated paper bonded to the surface of the plywood, this serves as a barrier between the hardwood surface of the plywood and the curing concrete.

Sheet sizes are 1800/2400 x 1200mm and are available in 12, 17, 19 and 25mm thickness. Manufactured to AS/NZS 2269 with an ‘A’ Bond glueline it is stress graded to F14 and F17.

MARINE PLYWOOD

Manufactured to BS1088 or AS2272, Marine Plywood is a premium quality plywood from species selected especially for their density, bond strength, impact resistence and surface finish characteristics.

With an ‘A’ Bond glueline it is available from 3mm to 32mm thick, in 2400 x 1200 sheets. Suitable for a variety of applications, it is most commonly used in the boat building industry.

PLYWOOD FLOORING

With a solution for almost every flooring application, Tongue and grooved Plywood Flooring is not only versatile, it is very strong and durable. Stress graded to F11 or F14, Plywood Flooring can be CCA, ACQ, or LOSP treated.    It comes in a range of thickness from 12mm to 25mm in 2400/2700 x 1200mm sheets.
